We have developed a new version of AOL Desktop for Mac in order to provide you with an improved AOL Mail experience. We highly recommend that you upgrade to AOL Desktop for Mac 1.7 as soon as possible to ensure that you do not experience any interruptions in your ability to send or receive AOL Mail. Please be aware that during your upgrade, you may experience an initial period where your mail loads slowly. Don't fret though - this should only occur once.
Welcome to the Mac@AOL Blog. My name is Lee Givens and I'm the Product Lead for the Mac and iPhone products at AOL. You can find the latest information on AOL's software development on the Mac and any cool happenings at AOL. The purpose of the blog is to create a feedback loop so we can hear from our loyal AOL Mac users. Managing a blog is a lot of work, so I enlisted support from the whole team...the Mac team is made up of dedicated Macintosh developers, QA engineers and Product folks.

41. Comments about the instability of AOL are right on the mark. The little circle with the minus sign inside requires rebooting to get up and running again without having to wait a long time for AOL 1.7 to "wake up" to its sleep mode. I'm losing graphics sent to me: more and more emailers' graphics elements are just blank boxes; I have to save the images to my hard drive and use another software package to view them. Animated items, including movies, are jerky and intermittent as they play: the sound is OK, but the images are jumpy. None of the "movie" problems happen in any other browser I use. For the money (fees) I pay to AOL annually, it's a cost-effect fiasco, especially when it's clear the other browser programmers know how to make theirs work.

42. I have the same problem as many have posted. Like Dusty, I've taken to reading my email using my phone because AOL desktop is SO SLOW!!! I've tried to delete old mail, but it keeps reappearing. REally??? Is this the BEST you can do?
I so want to dump AOL but hate the hassle of changing my email addy with every account I have.
Is there any hope of AOL desktop being fixed? Specifically the mail? I can't usually highlight font in email replies, the cursor jumps around, nor can I drag a link from my favorites into a mail.
PLEASE keep working on it!!
And- would Hanstoby222 please explain how you use aol.com instead AOL desktop? When I go to aol.com, it won't take me to my mail when I click the icon.
Thanks.

43. 1.7 seems just the same. Doesn't work any better than before. Stuff that didn't work right before doesn't now either. Still can't move anything from saved on my mac to saved on AOL. I thought just before updating would be a good time to clean out some old mail saved on my mac. After deleting a bunch, other mail I didn't delete is missing and some email addresses don't show in list view. Do you have an inbox repair tool? Sure would like to fix those emails and get them moved to the host so I can just use web mail instead of this junk.

44. Whew! Now I don't know what to do... Installing 1.7...... seems like a big mistake, and I thought 1.5 was bad. 1.5 is actually new to this dial-up old time AOL user - back to when you'd get AOL CDs in the mail w/ "30 free trial minutes". I still use 10.2 to sign on to AOL (and check mail) then to 1.5 for the Welcome page for news, google, etc. I think I should just hold tight.

45. I too agree nothing has changed, AOL Mail on MAC is still AWFUL!!!! It can't be that difficult to make a working version for MAC!!! Like previous posters, I also don't want to go through the hassle of changing my e-mail address, but the hassle of dealing with the current problems is worse. I've been with AOL since its inception, but if they don't have it working by the new year I'm canceling my account of 20+ years!!!

46. I downloaded 1.7, but when I try to log onto aol, I continue to get a message that warns me that I still need to download the software. Any advice?

47. We have a 2x2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon G5 Mac w/Mac OS X 10.5.8 and I just downloaded & successfully installed the latest AOL Desktop 1.7 for Mac, however ... everytime I try to launch the program, I keep getting the pop-up window "Software Update Notification: AOL Desktop for Mac Upgrade: This is the final notification that this version of AOL Desktop for Mac is now discontinued. Please download AOL Desktop for Mac 1.7 as soon as possible ..."
Why is the latest version not launching and why do I keep getting this message when I've already downloaded and installed the latest version of AOL Desktop 1.7 for this Mac?
Please explain! Thank you.

48. I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHY AOL FOR MAC IS SO TERRIBLE IT SCREWS UP THE MAIL ALL THE TIME AND CONSTANTLY ASKS TO UP GRADE TO 1.7 EVERY TIME I GO TO AOL.
I'M ABOUT TO GIVE UP ON AOL. THIS IS SO UNPROFESSIONAL I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

49. This upgrade is HORRIBLE! It takes a minimum of 3 tries to even get AOL to come up when I try to open it. Then when it does, it's slow, will only open 1 message before it goes into perpetual thinking mode. I have to go between old mail, sent mail, trash - anything - to make it open another message. Then most of the time it hangs up and crashes. This is not just every once in a while - IT's EVERYTIME! I've had to take the time to reset all my organization in my mac mailbox so that I can function normally. Did you not try this out before you upgraded? And how do I get back to the old system - which by the way - had some of the same issues, just not as bad.

50. I am unable to receive mail on my apple computer. I downloaded the new software aol software for mac 1.7 several times. Got a confirmation that it was downloaded, but still can not receive my emails. What am I doing wrong or what are you doing wrong?

52. Ever since upgrading to aol desktop 1.7 I have been unable to keep my mac i book connected via my dialup connection. I keep getting error messages regarding aim, stating I'm signed on in multiple locations, and then get booted. Has anyone any experience with this?? I don't use aim on my mac dial up connection. I've set it to don't accept any incoming ims, but the problems continue..I've tried different access numbers, but the same thing happens...some times I'm able to stay on for a few minutes, but never long enough to read or write emails...any solutions out there???
Is there any way to disable or uninstall the aim software? It seems to be integrated into desktop in this version. Or is it symptomatic of a bigger problem...HELP!!
Happy Holidays ALL

53. In the AIM Preferences pane, under Privacy, check "Allow only users on my Buddy list." Then, on the Buddy list flyout, add just one "buddy" to your list -" AOL System Msg" - and set your "state" to "Available" in the pop-up list at the top. This will allow you to get error messages from AOL without being bothered by any other messages. I still sometimes have the same problem as you do, but it's usually because of time delays and slowness caused by using a dial-up connection. It goes away when I respond to the system message and/or wait a bit until the AIM times out.

54. I'm about to "upgrade" to Mac 1.7, but after reading all these negative comments, I'm wondering if I should continue. Right now my AOL is not working at all. No e-mail access. I'm on a schedule, trying to do important stuff before guests arrive and my e-mail goes down. I can't believe this. I thought this would be a good time to "upgrade". You're all telling me I will continue to have problems. The only reason I stick with AOL is because I can have my phone calls show up on my screen and download the message. The sound is better than on the telephone and I have a hearing problem. That's why I like that feature. Anyone know if any other browser does this? I'd leave AOl in a minute and have been with them since my first computer umpteen years ago. What do I do now? Upgrade or not?

55. AOL has truly been awful to completely disenfranchise mac users from chat rooms. These were something special to AOL and exciting, and now they are either going to go to Yahoo or leave AOL entirely.... really smart!

56. I keep getting an automatic notice that wants me to upgrade aol desktop , I tried about 25 times and it won't go away. It says the download was successful but still pops up. I have turned off the automatic notification to manual updates but the notice still comes up. TO get my mail I have to go into Safari and then into AOL to bring my new mail up. Going straight into aol doesn't work ??????? Everything is blank except for the ads at the bottom, I have an Apple mini mac.

57. This has to be one of the worst Mac OS updates yet! Takes way too long to load email ... if they load at all. The NEW mail first loads with "old" mail in it then continues to cycle and sorts out the old from the new. I watch as the new mail count goes from 47 to 122 to 86 to 90 who knows when it will stop? I have no problem checking and using Apple's Mail program even to check AOL mail. NO PROBLEMS WITH APPLE'S MAIL PROGRAM! Why did AOL make the MAC users wait so long for this update of AOL Desktop? I am so glad I DO NOT pay for AOL any more! I also have had many of the same problems everyone here has had and the only solution seems to go back to an older version of AOL or better yet ... STOP USING AOL!

58. I am disgusted with AOL. PERIOD. Every time I attempt to sign on, I get an update notice for MAC 1.7. I have downloaded it 13 times in a row. What is going on??? My next step will be to rid of it!!!

59. It's Dec. 30 and my AOL Desktop for Mac 1.7.722 is still highly unsatisfactory. I've been an AOL subscriber from the very beginning and have NEVER had more problems just handling mail. When I open an email, I have to sit and stare at a black message window with "Message content loading..." being all I see. This happens with the most simple email messages. If I try to send an email with an attached photo (.jpeg), there is no "attachment" but only an imbedding of the photo in the text content area of the email -- where I don't want it -- and where other people's software kicks them out as potential imbedded bugs. When I close AOL Desktop and open Safari, and then go to AOL.com and log in for mail there, everything works quickly and well. WHY DOESN'T THE "DESKTOP" SOFTWARE HANDLE EMAILS SIMILARLY??

60. I have been having problems with the handling of mail on AOL Desktop for some time. I thought that the problem might have been caused by something in my computer. After reading all the other comments about the mail problems I see I am not alone. The problems have been identified by numerous subscribers. It seems that AOL has had plenty of time to correct this issue but the problems still continue. It is unfair to your subscribers to continue charging for a service that is unacceptable. If you do not intend to fix the problems in the near future please let me know so that I can start using another mail service provider.
