We have developed a new version of AOL Desktop for Mac in order to provide you with an improved AOL Mail experience. We highly recommend that you upgrade to AOL Desktop for Mac 1.7 as soon as possible to ensure that you do not experience any interruptions in your ability to send or receive AOL Mail. Please be aware that during your upgrade, you may experience an initial period where your mail loads slowly. Don't fret though - this should only occur once.
Welcome to the Mac@AOL Blog. My name is Lee Givens and I'm the Product Lead for the Mac and iPhone products at AOL. You can find the latest information on AOL's software development on the Mac and any cool happenings at AOL. The purpose of the blog is to create a feedback loop so we can hear from our loyal AOL Mac users. Managing a blog is a lot of work, so I enlisted support from the whole team...the Mac team is made up of dedicated Macintosh developers, QA engineers and Product folks.

21. I downloaded the new AOL Desktop but I do not like it
any better than the old AOL Desktop. Can't do so much on it.
I want to continue with my old old AOL
10.3.7 (Revision 4336-308)
although it is far far from perfect, full of fustrations but
better than the new AOL Desktop.
Problem. There's a notice that says:
"Do you want to participate without affecting your current
account? You can, but you must follow these instructions
carefully."
And when I click on - you must follow these instructions
carefully - I can't access, of course, because I can never
access any links of any kind on my AOL - have to copy them
onto the Safari or Firefox browsers, which work, whereas the
AOL browser does not. Now what???????????
Perhaps I'm going to lose my old AOL as well?????
I'd also like to know if there is a new, AOL for MACS
than 10.3.7 that I could be using. If better!!!
Please answer. I see no answers on these blogs from AOL...

22. PS. Basics. Best to get the basics working well for
email on MACs before all the fancy new things you have added
to hopefully increase revenue and members.
I don't even want to venture there, anywhere, until my day to day
AOL email is working as well as it should - on a MAC.
Who needs a AOL Desktop anyway? We can drag our AOL to the
dock and use that on our Desktop.

23. Problems with mail in 1.7 are even worse than in 1.5. I have the same problems as people who've already commented, plus my outgoing mail often gets stuck in Outgoing and has to be resent. I plan to transition away from AOL, now that I'm using a Mac full time.

24. This is getting comical. When I select Check for Updates... under the AOL Desktop menu, I get Update Error! An error occurred in retrieving update information. Please try again later. Cancel Update. Is someone playing jokes on us?

25. Yes, AOL, please fix the problem with Check for Updates. How are we supposed to install your updates if that function is broken? And please fix some of the problems outlined above soon!!

26. I understand to even move to a different version (I am still on 1.5) I need to save off email that is stored on My Mac. I can't find where this file is. I've tried following the directions of various website entries but can't find the file names they cite. I have lost my file cabinet before on a PC and don't want this to happen again.
Also, why isn't there a way to save an email as a text file or something? The only thing I found is to print it. Luckily as part of print I can print to a PDF file and make sure I download attachments.

27. I keep downloading this new version and installing it as directed. Yet, each time I get on AOL it keeps telling me to download the new AOL for MAC upgrade! How many times do I have to download before it gets finally installed?

28. When I send email from my mater account inside the AOL software it shows an error message citing a screen name that I had been using but have (now) deleted from my account. I can send from Safari but not from inside AOL--any suggestions?

29. I am reading everyone's comments and am thinking to myself "Exactly!". I am having the same issues as everyone else. Tonight, however, I tried to open new e-mail and what popped up was another e-mail from the list, and the mail I opened disappeared altogether...it's nowhere! It didn't go to the trash. It's not in the old mail list....it's gone! Completely gone! I can't get it back. Is anyone having this issue as well??? Isn't the idea behind e-mail communication? There is no communication if your e-mail just disappears!

30. I upgraded to 1.7.722 and can no longer send email through my primary username. I keep getting a Message Delivery Failure, 5.2.1 554 AOL will not accept delivery of this message.
It does not happen with my other screen names, just with my primary which happens to be the one I use all the time.
I have no problem with AOL webmail thru safari using my primary screen name. the problem is just with desktop for Mac.
I have tried emailing on both my desktop and laptop with no success using the primary username.
I called in and tech support ran me thru a 90 minute uninstall and reinstall of 1.7. still no luck.
Any ideas?

31. Haven't seen this issue listed above and not sure if it's exclusive to version 1.7.722, but I've been sending out a lot of emails lately and to confirm that I didn't miss anyone, I've been scanning my sent mail folder to make sure that everyone I thought I had emailed was there and found several instances where an email address I was sure I had sent to did not appear. At first I thought I was mistaken and had just not emailed them, but now I've sent out like 4 additional email, checking each time to see the "delivery successful" window come up, but it's been hit and miss as far as if the successful delivered items show up in my sent mail???
Apart from that, a lot of my emails take forever to open when opened. Sometimes I leave the room and come back 5 minutes later and it's still thinking about it (even if there's no attachment, or pics). I go to AOL.com and they open right away.

32. HOw in the world do I get AOL desktop OFF my desktop? I think that I'm going to have to cancel my AOL account altogether. I have been on AOL since 1995, and I can't remember ever being this frustrated/angry/whatever over AOL. Even when I had to pay for individual minutes, it wasn't this bad. I should not have to go to AOL.com to read email. Also, I should be able to delete old screen names and add new ones. I surely can't do it on AOL desktop. I am sooo frustrated.

33. I'm having the same problems with 1.7.722 that it seems others are reporting: outgoing mail is hit-or-miss. I find several emails never even left: I had to re-send each of them, individually through a new copy of the email, sometimes days later. And to do this, I had to "walk" each one, one at a time, through the process, as only looking in my outbound box would get it to actually send and appear in my send box.
I wasn't having anything like this difficulty in the Beta, and I'm switching back to that for now.
I have to also add: I've displayed a great deal of "product loyalty" with regard to AOL, having been a member since 1997. But AOL Desktop for Mac is so criminally inferior to what I see AOL for PC is, and so often buggy in itself, that I am tempted to give up, even though I like keeping this email address I have had for so long. PLEASE: compete for my business!

34. I've been with AOL since the early 90s. I switched to a Mac computer in '04 and have stayed with AOL through every Desktop upgrade, including this last one. My problems now are: often, when typing email, the print shows up way after I've typed it -- what's with this? Supposedly had to download a new Flashplayer, did, intstalled it (again) but still can't open certain videos & photos. Does the wheel next to the mail columns EVER stop spinning? I often have the same problems as others opening mail -- says it's loading, but never does. I agree with those who say, why are we Mac users second class? Don't we rate a great AOL???

35. This new version is absolutely horrible, even worse than the last one. Incoming mail doesn't go in the in box. I go to AOL online and find messages there. Outgoing mail says it's sent, but then it sits in the out box. If I open it and try to resend, it goes nowhere. If I try to close it, it says it hasn't been sent. Very bad. I hate it!

36. What a disaster! Old AOL was terrible, but this is a giant step backwards. Mail takes forever to load. I get mail on my iPhone long before I get it on my laptop. New AOL freezes all the time and has to be constantly rebooted, especially when I have been away from my mail for a few hours. New AOL disconnects itself dozens of times a day. Attachments take forever to load. When I try to send an e-mail, about 20% of the time the mail just goes into the outbox and sits there forever. Sometimes it is delivered, sometimes it is not. There is no way to tell. Even if sent, the messages don't show up in my sent mail folder.

37. Been an AOL user since early 1990s as well as Safari in recent years. Downloaded the latest AOL change for Mac and it didn't take. Downloaded again a week later, worked great for a while and now it is worse; latest emails are a month old, will not delete old mail, very slow, etc. We are now using our old version of AOL just to read emails. 38. I've now installed this three times - and still am not sure it's installed! Nothing looks different. And I keep getting a notice that those of you at AOL feel I have not installed the new program and I will have difficulty sending & receiving mail after December 10th when the old desktop is not in use anymore. HELP!

39. I have all the same identical problems as #36 with AOL Desktop. This is supposed to be an improvement instead we're stuck with an absolute disaster. The worst was when I wrote a nice detailed follow up email to a potential future boss after having a very positive interview with her. I hit send, it gave me confirmation that it had been sent, I clicked ok, checked my sent folder and...no trace of it. Nothing! The mailbox only showed that it was trying to connect yet AGAIN. So I'm left without knowing if it was received and my options are either sending her another saying "I'm sorry if you're receiving this as a duplicate but..." Right off the bat I come off sounding like an imbecile who doesn't know how to work an email account. Alternately, I don't write another letter and possibly lose a job opportunity based on poor decorum.
I have 1.7.722 and when trying to check for updates, all I get is "An error occurred in retrieving update information. Please try again later."

40. I have been an AOL customer since I was 27 yrs old. I am now 42 and have always had a MAC. I have downloaded AOL Beta, AOL Desktop, AOL this that and the other. I am frustrated by the want of AOL to include MAC users. We are a large diverse group and it is sad that this organization is so unwilling to listen to its customers. I am tired of the hassle of AOL - first it's pay us, then it's free, then you can then you can't use this or that version on your MAC.
