We have developed a new version of AOL Desktop for Mac in order to provide you with an improved AOL Mail experience. We highly recommend that you upgrade to AOL Desktop for Mac 1.7 as soon as possible to ensure that you do not experience any interruptions in your ability to send or receive AOL Mail. Please be aware that during your upgrade, you may experience an initial period where your mail loads slowly. Don't fret though - this should only occur once.
Welcome to the Mac@AOL Blog. My name is Lee Givens and I'm the Product Lead for the Mac and iPhone products at AOL. You can find the latest information on AOL's software development on the Mac and any cool happenings at AOL. The purpose of the blog is to create a feedback loop so we can hear from our loyal AOL Mac users. Managing a blog is a lot of work, so I enlisted support from the whole team...the Mac team is made up of dedicated Macintosh developers, QA engineers and Product folks.

1. I've been using 1.7.716 for Desktop since you brought it out. There are certain imperfections:
1) You can't specify where a download is to go except in Preferences. That means that you can't change that temporarily, to put a folder's worth of files into a certain new folder.
2) Too many confirmations when you want to close a window on Send email, and also when you want to delete a message. We're really not that dumb (I hope).
3) on the Welcome screen, I can't edit certain options, like Local news.
4) The Welcome screen is aimed too much toward kids or new users. The ads take the tone that you are some kind of moron.
5) Attached downloads don't always show in the mail. I have to switch to the old AOL mail to detect that there's an attachment at all.
That's all for now. Thanks for your improvements.

3. Agree with all of nanschus and all the AOL ads always come through but not the attachments. Old AOL is the only way to get email reliably.

4. I just want to know why AOL on a Mac has to be SO different and SO much worse than AOL on a PC?

5. In addition, had to cut and paste from version 1.7 mail to post these comments here.

6. I don't use AOL Desktop anymore, since the new aol.com
became available. I find it very good on my MAC and
see no reason to put this Version on my Dock.

7. 1) You don't say what's changed.
2) I'm sick of AOL Desktop. How do I get my mail out of it - either onto AOL servers or otherwise. Moving form my mac to the server has never worked in 1.5. Will it work in this version.

8. I read about the various disadvantages. AOL still is unable to offer a comfortable working browser. Too much effort is centered on AIM which is an intrusive, annoying program.

9. I am having nothing but problems too. I have to keep rebooting to read mail. When new mail opens my system just keeps going through the loop. Their ads at the bottom of the emails have no trouble appearing though.

10. Since upgrading to AOL Desktop 1.7 I now use my iPhone to check AOL mail because it TAKES FOREVER to load AOL, then Mail takes even longer. There have been many times I have had to force quit. Is there anything I can do to improve this problem? Uninstall / reinstall????

11. Have been using AOL Desktop version 1.7.722 for several days now with my dial-up connection. It does seem more stable than the previous versions. At least I haven't had any crashes on Sign Out yet (knock on wood). The Mail seems to get processed a tad bit faster, although I deliberately have been keeping my saved emails to a minimum. The transition from AOL Desktop Beta version 1.7.716 was smooth enough, but I lost the emails I had saved to my Mac. Also, I realized just in time that I had to rename the old AOL Desktop folder from version 1.6 that I had in my Library> Application Support folder so that opening the new version could create a new AOL Desktop folder. Unfortunately there were no instructions accompanying this roll out. Like Morton Wright, I'm not a fan of AIM, but I have managed to avoid annoying interruptions by specifying in the Preferences that I will accept IMs only from those on my Buddy List and I have no one on my Buddy List. It would be nice to have a copy of the Preferences on my Mac so they can be changed off-line instead of requiring on-line access to make changes. Like neilfd, I have trouble sending some attachments. PDF files that are more than one page have only the first page displayed in the email and the recipient is unable to download the whole document. As far as I can see, nothing has been changed in the Message Actions drop down menu under MAIL. There is still no way to insert an active URL, and the Status operation is non-functional. If the improvements to the mail storage system have been completed, perhaps now some of the other deficiencies could be addressed.

12. Even after the upgrade, I cannot get any new mail to show up on my desktop. This has been going on for a month with one screenname, and since last week (after I upgraded) for another. I feel stymied and am very close to canceling my AOL account entirely.

13. This is really frustrating. I have upgraded, but this mail situation is really bad. I have to constantly close AOL desk top to get new mail. Please fix this sooon.

14. I too have had the problem opening my mail with the toolbar. This was true of the old version and the new upgraded version too. I have to close out and sign back on and sometimes that doesn't even help. Finally I'll just open it via Safari. It's very frustrating. Also my mail options won't maintain the setting to sort "old" and "sent" mail by the date received. It sorts it by the sender instead. I have to manually set it every time! I was hoping these glitches would be fixed with the new toolbar but alas they remain to drive me crazy. Going to change soon if this isn't fixed.

15. I am very unhappy with AOL desk top. I also use aol for os x for only I photo. I am paying for service and when I call about my many problem I get little help. I have been a using AOL Since 2002. I really am disgusted, I also have other Email address. Perhaps I should cancel and only use Yahoo. I Downloaded 1.7 still shows 1.5 ????

16. I have been a beta tester from the beginning. While the browser certainly works like a real browser, I don't really need it. Here's the big problem. If someone sends me an email with a large attachment, this AOL Desktop software requires that the entire attachment be downloaded before I can read the email. This is a huge fatal flaw. On the old AOL for Mac OS X, you could open an email, read it, and view the name and size of the attachment and then decide if you even want to download it. Terrible terrible mistake in design here. Second, if I send an email with a large attachment, there is no "progress viewer", no way to see if the attachment is being sent and how it is proceeding. Again, on the old software there was a nice bar so you could see your progress. Why in the world would you remove such useful features? I know why, because you couldn't figure out how to build them into the new software.

17. By the way, was it the intention of the software people to eliminate the "new" and "old" folders in my mail, because on the new 1.7.722 version that's what you did. Not a smart move either.I went back to the last version, 1.7.716. Would someone wake up and take a 5 hour energy drink out there?

18. Can someone tell me how to empty your trash on the new aol desktop. I just can't delete trash.

19. Please can someone tell me how to delete trash on the new AOL Desktop before my computer hits the wall.

20. Why can't AOL get it right for Mac users? SO UNPROFESSIONAL giving us inferior rather than cutting edge technology. New AOL Desktop as useless as the old one. I can't do this and can't do that.
I am back to my old old old AOL for OSX - Version 10.3.7 (Revision 4136-308) - and back to having to copy every link to open it, on to Safari or Firefox, because links don't open well on AOL. i have been with AOL since the mid-90s and would be gone for sure if I didn't have so much research on AOL. I am sooooo frustrated with AOL.
Prefer you forget the AOL Desktop and get to the 21st century with AOL, in general. Please.
We can all drag our AOL to the Desktop so why do we have a non-working new one. Again.
