Building on the Commitment: AOL Launches AIM for Mac 1.0
Communicate whenever you want, wherever you are, in whatever way that suits you best - on your Mac or on the go with your iPhone™.
The AOL Mac team is pleased to announce the release of AIM for Mac 1.0. As with
AOL Desktop for Mac 1.5, AIM for Mac was built from the ground up by Mac users for Mac users. Highlights of the new software include:
- True AIM Experience: AIM for Mac will allow you to select your own Buddy sounds, wallpaper and animated Buddy Icons from the AIM Expressions library.
- Fast, reliable File Transfers: This is the Real AIM, not just an AIM-compatible IM client so file transfers are fast and efficient. Send files, folders and pictures to all your Buddies.
- Tabbed IMs for Tiger Users: AIM for Mac works with Both Tiger and Leopard - Mac OS X 10.4.8 (and above) and Mac OS X 10.5.3 (and above). Same features, same great user interface.
- Accessible: AIM for Mac was designed to work with Apple's VoiceOver on both Tiger and Leopard. You can navigate, review IM conversations and get your Buddy's status. On Mac OS X Leopard, we support the new natural-sounding voice – Alex.
AIM for Mac 1.0 is a great complement to our
AIM for iPhone. Send and receive messages over WiFi, EDGE, or 3G networks while connecting to anyone on the AIM network worldwide, whether they're on AOL®, AIM®, ICQ®, .Mac or MobileMe. You can even send IMs and SMS text messages – even from an iPod touch (iPod touch only supports WiFi, SMS text messaging not available in all countries).
AIM is a registered trademark of AOL LLC. .Mac, Apple, iPhone, iPod touch, Leopard, Mac, Macintosh, MobileMe, and Tiger are trademarks of Apple, Inc.

21. I downloaded AIM for Mac to my computer, but I can't find it. and I'm not stupid, I've downloaded things before. But it tells me it's been installed, then it just disappears.

22. I agree with most of the comments above. Although it certainly looks pretty, it doesn't do much. I'll take substance over looks any day and have downloaded the old version where I could save conversations, set up alerts to let me know when my buddies sign on, etc. I am amazed that they would take out so much of the functionality and optional settings of the old version.

23. I tried to d/l and use the new AIM for Mac Beta 1.0 (46). Must have tried a half-dozen times. It crashes when Connecting and does that " Unexpectedly Quit" Macintosh thing. I cannot figure out why, and cannot get the software to work. Just keep removing the install, emptying the trash, trying again.
I'm using Mac OS-X 10.4.11. This apparently is a valid OS for the new AIM for MAC to operate under.
Anyone else having this problem, and what is the fix for it??
Thanks !

24. I don't know, but I've been able to chat with my mac buddies, but still can't videochat with my pc (ugh) friends. They're using 6.8 AIM and I had hoped that downloading the new 1.0 for Mac version (from y old 4.8 would do the trick. No dice - still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Hey Peggy, the AOL Mac Team believes in delivering a great experience when it comes to interoperable video chat, but we have a lot of work to do on both sides of the chat. As with most Mac users, we have friends using Windows and Mac<->PC chat would be great (I'm still working on making them Mac switchers :)
Please stay tuned!

25. I guess they're not going to acknowledge anyone's complaints about the lack of a logging feature. Every other IM software allows that and the old AIM for Mac allowed it. They took away a standard feature, expected no one to notice apparently and now they won't even comment with an "I'm sorry" or "it will be added back into the next release." Nice. Thanks, AOL.

Hey Brian, our team is back from Macworld and working hard on the next version of our Mac and iPhone apps. Logging is a very important feature for me and all I ask is to stay tuned!

26. Not only can't I saw chats/conversations, but you can't print them either. I'm going back to 4.7 in the meantime, or will use iChat until they get it right.

27. I really like the AIM for Mac client. It's great to have tabbed buddy windows on my Mac. However, the lack of IM/Chat logging is a deal breaker. It's really disappointing. I'm switching back to AIM 4.7 until they add the feature.

Hello Ed,
Hang in there. We're working on the next version of AIM for Mac and I'm a fan of logging also!
Thanks,

28. I really like this new version of AIM for the mac. But there are some things that bother me, one is that I can't do a video chat and two is that I can't upload my own image for my buddy icon.

29. it seems to be really hard to set my own image file as my buddy icon. it shouldnt be this hard to do that :(

31. Aside from the lack of logging, I'm pretty disappointed at the inability to choose custom colors for fonts and save them, and the loss of drag and drop for inviting people off my buddy list into a chat.
also, for some reason in the 1.0 using the invite option by clicking someone's name on my buddy list rather than using the '+' button in the chat, it will log me out of the chat and rename it to 'chat 1' and then re-enter me into the room on a new tab. very odd... :\

33. I love this program, it's like a combination between the old AIM client and iChat. Aesthetically it's awesome, and it's great to finally have some of the newer AIM features for Mac. Although I have a problem with the extremely limited amount of font color choices and the fact that all of my "Offline Buddies" show up in my buddy list and take up so much of the space.

34. It annoyed me a lot that my offline buddies were shown at the same time as the online. I found out how to fix that though for aim for mac 1.1 go to "view", "offline buddies" and change it to "view as one group". That fixed it for me.
Has anyone figured out how to upload their own buddy icon? Mine disappeared and I want it back but can't figure out how! I go to expressions and find the spot to change the buddy icon, but only from the preset choices, not my own personal one.
