Building on the Commitment: AOL Launches AIM for Mac 1.0
Communicate whenever you want, wherever you are, in whatever way that suits you best - on your Mac or on the go with your iPhone™.
The AOL Mac team is pleased to announce the release of AIM for Mac 1.0. As with
AOL Desktop for Mac 1.5, AIM for Mac was built from the ground up by Mac users for Mac users. Highlights of the new software include:
- True AIM Experience: AIM for Mac will allow you to select your own Buddy sounds, wallpaper and animated Buddy Icons from the AIM Expressions library.
- Fast, reliable File Transfers: This is the Real AIM, not just an AIM-compatible IM client so file transfers are fast and efficient. Send files, folders and pictures to all your Buddies.
- Tabbed IMs for Tiger Users: AIM for Mac works with Both Tiger and Leopard - Mac OS X 10.4.8 (and above) and Mac OS X 10.5.3 (and above). Same features, same great user interface.
- Accessible: AIM for Mac was designed to work with Apple's VoiceOver on both Tiger and Leopard. You can navigate, review IM conversations and get your Buddy's status. On Mac OS X Leopard, we support the new natural-sounding voice – Alex.
AIM for Mac 1.0 is a great complement to our
AIM for iPhone. Send and receive messages over WiFi, EDGE, or 3G networks while connecting to anyone on the AIM network worldwide, whether they're on AOL®, AIM®, ICQ®, .Mac or MobileMe. You can even send IMs and SMS text messages – even from an iPod touch (iPod touch only supports WiFi, SMS text messaging not available in all countries).
AIM is a registered trademark of AOL LLC. .Mac, Apple, iPhone, iPod touch, Leopard, Mac, Macintosh, MobileMe, and Tiger are trademarks of Apple, Inc.

1. I think the new Mac client is a lot prettier than the old one... but I'm disappointed that the My Expressions page isn't the same as it is for AOL and/or PC users. The help files on the AOL site said that there should be a link to upload my own files for my icon and wallpaper, but it isn't there with AIM for Mac takes me to the expressions page.
Is that going to change? I think everything else is great... I just wish there were more options for those small customisation touches.

2. I love the new AIM but I do wish that when I set an away message a window popped up like in the old AIM or a tab like on the PC version. If I can do this can someone please tell me how? Thanks

3. There's no feature to save the conversation logs. Is it forgotten or intentional? I do think it's pretty important to have the (wanted) conversations to be saved, and this was possible with the older AIM for Mac. So, why omitting it now? I believe PC users DO have this feature. When will it be that Mac users can have everything equally to the PC users? It's kind of lame that it took the team to release this beta already. And it's only thanks to iPhone and iPod touch, apparently.

4. Also, I hate that you can't remove offline buddies from the buddy list. Why would I want my buddy list to be cluttered with the names of people that aren't online (and probably never will be again)? AIM is a dying breed thanks to the likes of Gmail chat, at least don't mess up the software for loyal users by removing our favorite features like chat logs and the option to only display online buddies in the buddy list.

5. I agree completely with Yochoko, saving the conversation or message logs is VERY important. We use AIM to discuss some business items throughout the workday and I MUST be able to refer back to previous messages.
If the great AIM gods are listening, we NEED this back!!!

6. you can remove the offline buddies, it's under view>offline buddies. my biggest concern is that i can't set my own truly personalized aim sounds. in previous versions of aim all it took was replacing a .wav file. now i have no idea where the sounds are even stored on my computer.

7. Will there eventually be a plugin architecture for this version of aim for mac? The SDK on dev.aol.com only has sources for the 0.8 series of the new OS X aim client, and while that has a plugin tab in its preferences, I could never get it to work with the demonstration .plugin (kidIM) from the aimlite site (http://x.aim.com/laim/index.php).
Also thirding the logging feature.

8. Is there anyway to set up a buddy notification - were an alert window opens when someone signs online or returns from an idle state? There was on the older versions but I can't seem to find one now.

9. the new version seems more stable and is certainly prettier, but i had to roll back to the old one when i realized i had lost two days of logs with the new one...the new one kept all my settings but as there is no log function, my log settings were ignored!!!
i actually use aim for business and without a log feature, to use the new one i would have to manually copy and paste the ims i need to archive, and that is too much of a hassle, not to mention the danger of a crash or, more likely, shutting down the computer before remembering to make the copy...nice try but for me, this is a step back, so no thanks...

10. I think a big feature missing from version is IM Logging. This feature seems like it should be so easy to implement with the Cocoa frameworks. I use this feature with AIM 6 for Win and I believe it was there on the older AIM for PPC Macs. Until this feature appears again, I'll probably continue to use AIM 6 with VMWare on my Mac. Once the feature does come in though, it'd be nice to have an IM Log browser like that available for the Message Archiver in both the WIN and MAC versions of Yahoo IM client. I mention this because it appears that AIM 6 for WIN forces you to manually locate and open IM logs in a web browser. It'd be nice to have an IM Log browser that could sort conversations by user and/or date.

12. Does anyone know how to block buddy expressions? My friend has a very annoying dog bark when she goes online or offline, it startles my cat!
I also miss the logging feature, I'm sure they're be other things I'd like the old one back for. I tried using the last version I had installed and it keeps quitting on me so I guess I'm stuck with the new one!

13. I like the looks but I can't send messages to cellphones anymore cause it keeps telling me that user is offline... Any help on that?

14. I want to be able to sort the buddy list to ONLINE and OFFLINE... I don't see why this couldn't be simpler. This is the basics here.. I dont want to scroll down my hundred or so offline buddies just to get to my online guys...

15. The old aim is still better than this new one. SO much has been left out it makes me sick. I can't save my conversations which is a HUGE issue for me and the job I do, I can't get this stupid little website window to stop popping up every time I launch the stupid thing, I can't customize it with the icons I WANT, actually I can barely do anything with it at all, the only thing is this version won't quit on me, but then again, so won't ichat or adium and i can so a heck of a lot more with them then I can with this thing.

16. They still haven't fixed the lack of custom colors in IM windows. When running AIM and AOL together away messages don't show up. Is this really ready for general release?

17. I REALLY miss the logging feature (over aim 6.x for xp/vista).
I have recently switched over to a MacBook for my primary use PC and was VERY happy to find that AIM for Mac 1.0 was just released. I love the interface and how close it is to the PC version.
PLEASE, if anyone on the AIM-MAC team is reading this PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE implement a logging feature (similar to that of aim 6.0 for pc) into aim for mac.

18. @ Duran - Hit view -> Offline Buddies and play with the settings there to get your offline friends sorted properly
Also, I noticed that there might be a bug with the away message interface. I am running 10.5.6 / aim 1.0.46 and notice that sometimes when I put an away message up, it doesnt show up, or I have a hard time getting it to go off (just now, I hit available and it still showed me as away, I hit it again and still nothing).
I have to put ANOTHER away message up (a different one) then hit available for it to work

19. Hey guys, if you want logging and all that stuff, use iChat. It wasn't abandoned four years ago and it comes with every Mac. Or try Adium.

20. Three things that bother me very much:
1. There's no option to save conversations
2. Stupid AOL site pops up every time I sign on.
3. No webcam option.
