We're on our way to AOL Desktop for Mac 1.5 (currently in beta), the AOL Mac Team has posted a small update to AOL Desktop for Mac (now version 1.2.1). What's fixed in this update? Check out our fixed issues list:
• Fixed Mail Outbox issue where mail is resent from the Outbox on subsequent sign-in sessions.
• Fixed issues reading mail where "Message Content Loading" was observed and the mail content never loaded.
• Fixed Trash folder issue where deleted mail from the Sent folder showed "Sent To" instead of "Send From" in the mail header.
• Added Spell Check button to the Mail Compose window toolbar overflow.
• Changed 'open Spell Check dialog box' keyboard short cut to COMMAND - ; (Command-semi-colon).
Please drop me a comment if this update improves your AOL Desktop for Mac experience. We're going to continue to release updates to AOL Desktop for Mac and bring all-new AOL Mac apps in the near future!
Thanks!

1. Does AOL Desktop For Mac 1.2.1 support dialing out from the modem? I'd like to install this on my parents' Mac. They are on AOL dialup service, but I want to upgrade them from AOL For Mac OS X. Thanks!

2. I have lost my "new mail" on the last download and my buddy list does not appear. I now have to read my email through Safari. Any suggestions?

3. We just upgraded to v1.2.1 and now text attachments appear as inline text. We can still pick them off as attachments when I go directly to AOL.com and login there. Is there a setting in AOL Desktop for Mac 1.2.1 to keep attachments as attachments? Grazi!

4. I continue to use 1.2.1 but still find that it occasionally will NOT load e-mail contents and is still painfully slow. I have figured out that if I wait long enough after launching 1.2.1, it eventually gets more responsive - seems to take a long time to be fully "up". Same thing with the e-mail application. In addition, the e-mail app has an annoying characteristic - when I launch it anewI, the inbox cue will come up listing a long list of no longer current e-mails -- things I read or deleted during a previous session. It appears to pull up an older version, but then if I let it run for several minutes, the inbox cue eventually becomes accurate - listing only traffic that I "kept as new" during my prior session plus any new incoming traffic.

Hello tbkirvan,
We're working hard to fix the issues some of our users are having with mail. We just released AOL Desktop for Mac 1.5 beta 4 and the entire beta was focused on mail performance. We're hoping to get 1.5 released to the general user base soon!
thanks...

5. How do you uninstall AOL Desktop for Mac?
-----------------------------------
Yep, just like Ghislain said, most Mac apps can be uninstalled by dragging the application to the trash. That's it.
thanks...

6. Cjones, as any Mac app : just trash the file (in your Applications folder)!
Some preferences will stay in your home folder, but these preferences are very tiny.

8. I just downloaded AOL Desktop 1.2.1 (351) and opened up two recent emails, one from SanDisk and one from the Obama campaign. Neither displayed all the contents. I had to return to my AOL for Mac OS X version 10.3.7 to view my emails.

9. I started using the AOL Desktop for Mac about 10 days ago and am highly dissatisfied! Previously I used AOL for Mac OS X and was very happy with it. The only reason I changed was that I hoped to get a better browser and not have to frequently switch to Safari or Firefox. I'm running OS 10.4.11
First, EVERYTHING is SLOW!!!!! Excruciatingly slow compared to the old system. I use AOL primarily for email and frequently send and receive attachments to them. I also browse the internet and frequently want to forward an internet page to a friend.
I now have to do an extra step at sign-in. Previously, when I opened AOL, the cursor would automatically be on the password line. Now I have to manually place the cursor on password. The extra step is a nuisance.
There are THREE ways to get back to the previous page: Close by clicking on the red dot in the upper left corner of a page closing a tab, and selecting Welcome Screen. There should be only ONE say, as in Safari or Firefox. It should be the "back" button.
When I open a page (Did I mention how slow it is?) I no longer have an option to use it in a new mail document as I did before. I frequently want to email an internet page to a friend, but there is apparently no way to do that.
Emails take forever (one to three minutes!) to load and sometimes won't load at all. They used to load very quickly.
Graphics contained in emails frequently won't be displayed. Instead, I get a blue square with a question mark in it where the graphic should be. Examples are emails from American Airlines and Barnes & Noble books.
Did I mention how SLOW everything works?
When I receive an email with an attachment, I now have to go through an extra step. After clicking on "save" I (eventually!) get a box where I must select "Save All" or "(name of attachment)" Only then do I get a dialog box that permits me to save the attachment to my desktop. Why the extra step? It would be OK if there are more than one attachment, but that's unusual.
I receive some emails that contain internet links. Some of the links are in blue so all I have to do is click on them to go to that link. But some emails that previously had links in blue are now in black type so that to go to that link I must copy and paste. What happened? Another nuisance.
When I want to delete an email, sometimes (but not always) I have to select it with the cursor even though it is already highlighted.
Deleting an email is extremely slow! It was quick in the old system.
When I send an email, why does it first go to the Outbox? Why not directly to Sent? I have no idea why an Outbox is needed in the first place.
Getting the "Message successfully sent" screen takes forever. And when I acknowledge it by clicking OK, I first get a spinning beach ball. Previously the screen disappeared immediately. Another way to be SLOW!
If there are any improvements over AOL for Mac OS X I haven't found them. Perhaps some "power users" can see an improvement, but for everyday management of email traffic it is terrible.
Does anyone try to do any of these operations in the real world? How many of these problems have been reported to you and what is your plan and schedule for fixes?
I'm almost ready to go back to AOL for OS X but worry that my address book and favorites won't transfer back. And I'm afraid to try any of the Beta versions for fear of just getting more problems.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

10. I have been unable to sign on at all so have been unable to even check out the cool new features.

11. Where are on the "On My Mac" files stored? I want to make sure they are in a location getting backed up or are not deleted when I'm troubleshooting like right now. I just used Migration assistant to transfer all my data and applications from my PowerMac G4 to a MacBook Pro. Everything seems to work now except AOL. I've rerun the installer, deleted some preferences, fixed permissions, etc. It still gets stuck opening.

12. 1. When typing a new email, screen doesn't keep up with keyboard. And I'm a very slow typist!
2. With AOL for Mac OS X 10.3.7, I could send an email by simply pressing "enter." That no longer works.
3. Favorites did not fully transfer.
4. Favorites are now so abbreviated it is hard to locate one out of several with similar titles. The old listing was much more useful.
5. I get some online newspapers, such as the New York Times. After selecting and viewing an article, the only way to get back to the NYT main page is go back to the Welcome screen, then select Mail, then select the NYT agaiin. Why can't I simply go back to the NYT main page like I could before? Also, when I first select an article I want to read, I get the Welcome screen before I get to the article. Why?
6. Why does your program think it is smarter than I am? When I try to enter an email address not in my address book but with similar first two letters the same as an address that is in my address book, it insists on using the one in the address book! But that's not what I wanted. I've encountered this twice.
7. It takes forever to delete an email! In the old program, it happened immediately.
I have yet to find any reason to use AOL Desktop for Mac. As a result, I'm going back to AOL for OS X 10.3.7. Please send an email to let me know when you have these and the previously reported problems resolved. Also tell me why I should change to AOL Desktop for Mac.

13. AOL Desktop 1.2.1 Address Book Problems: (1) I cannot put the same individual in more than one group--the contact disappears from the second/third/etc. list. This is a serious problem because a project I am working on has people who participate in more than one committee. In the OS X version this was not a problem. (2) Auto-suggest will often pull ideas from a an address book in a completely different sign in name. I have a few sign in names (personal, project, canoe paddling, travel, etc.) and yesterday while sending an email to my canoe paddling crew, it suggested names with email addresses from my project contacts. This also was not a problem in the OS X version.I have been a loyal AOL customer since 1994 so I hope they fix these bugs.

14. I sent a message to aol. The problems are too numerous to spell out. PLEASE TRY OUT THE NEW VERSION(1.5) ON YOUR MAC (IF YOU HAVE ONE) BEFORE RELEASING IT. It is obvious that you did not use the system yourself to see if the most basic features worked properly.

15. I will mention one basic problem. When you first sign on you can't change to a new user. It just automatically goes to the previous user. Then once the home page come up (very slowly), you must to the the menu and change users. Usually after the new page comes up and you go to your mail, you can't uses any of the functions (detete....etc). and have to quit the application and start over except the new user's page will open and functions will work. Very annoying and time consuming. I hate to do it, but if the problems with AOL 1.2.1 don't get straightened out, I will not go back to AOL OSX. I will fine another provider.

16. Lee--I am having MORE ADDRESS BOOK PROBLEMS in 1.2.1! Now I can't add any contacts in a group because they keep disappearing. Some addresses didn't move when I upgraded to AOL X 10.3.7 and I can't restore them either. Will this be fixed? I can wait another week or so but then fear my patience will run out. I invested hours and hours updating the Mailing Lists in groups that did transfer to 1.2.1 so seem stuck between a rock and a hard place. HELP!

19. I have been using AOL for 10 years now.. I just switched to a macbookpro after being a dell girl since the beginning..
I am completely dissatisfied with the process...
It is soooooo slow! I run my business and this is ridiculous..
It takes forever to load...
when will it be fixed?
Posted at 3:45AM on Nov 26th 2008 by joanie
20. 19 questions/complaints in 3 months.
4 answers.
0 fixes.
It has always been the numbers.
High PC user numbers VS much lower Mac user numbers who paid the same amount of money each month for unequal service equals...
Typical AOL rude contemptuous non response to Mac users for the 10 years I've used AOL.
How hard could it be to answer all 19?
If if were 1,900 I could understand the reasoning behind ignoring people who take the time to post here.
Number 1 reason I won't be switching to AOL Desktop.
