Today AOL released AOL Desktop for Mac 1.2 that resolves mail and AIM issues our customers have reported for the past few weeks. This is our second update to AOL Desktop for Mac which was launched in early May, 2008.
Changes in AOL Desktop for Mac 1.2:

21. Version 1.2 sucks as bad as version 1.0. This isn't rocket science guys. I avoid the whole mess and simply log into aol.com, thereby avoiding aol's bottom feeding software altogether.

22. After downloading the new Mac for Aol users, I cannot add to
My Favorites. I really miss that ability and cannot appreciate any gains
due to my loss. Marie Samuel

23. I know my old mail was transferred but when I access old mail it only goes back about a month. How I get to all that old sent and received mail.
I also can't access "Favorite".

24. It would be nice to know that AOL® Desktop for Mac 1.2 requires a G4 or later before you download.
There are still a lot of us G3 users out there.

25. You cannot assign a "signature" to emails. Although they explain it in the help menu, when you use the pull down menu there is no option to "create". When you try to open email that was previously viewed, and you are not online, you cannot view them. There is no "incoming saved mail". This creates a great inconvenience. I think the product has great potential, but I am afraid it is not ready yet.

26. After installing your most recent update my entire computer is frequently not able to fully load not only AOL but other internet sites. It frequently gets stuck at "Message Content Loading" and I have to relaunch or it will not load the new mail. The message at the bottom of the screen will say "loading 14 of 16, 4 errors" etc. This all started after downloading and installing the update. I have been locked out of my secured sites because the computer eventually times out (the loading never completes). Please help.

27. While I'm sure there are several items I could bring up, the biggest problem for me is the lack of a way to create clickable hyperlinks within email text you're writing, or receive clickable hyperlinks in mail sent to you. This is an antiquated problem that older AOL for MAC programs seemed to solve...in fact, if you just go to aol.com on any computer and pull up your account, you can create clickable hyperlinks in an email, why not with the latest AOL program??? It's ridiculous at this point in tech history to have to cut and paste a web address into the browser bar! Even AOL on PC makes it simple: type out a web address, it automatically turns into a clickable hyperlink.
Another thing: when you go to "switch screen names," in the old program you used to be able to see if you had mail in any other account. With this new program, there's no indication and you actually have to open up the screen name to check...again, very antiquated and highly inconvenient.
Your promo on the new AOL Desktop for MAC says it was created by MAC users, AOL users, etc.; if that's the case, I'm really, truly surprised that some of these most basic and expected features are not included. If anything, give us new features on top of the old ones but, come on, don't remove the most obvious, logical and convenient features that were already there!
I'm hoping AOL for MAC is really reading these posts and will take to heart some of the comments and complaints of users. As much as I want to use the new program, if these two features don't get fixed, as well as some of the others posted by other people, it'll be time to go back to the old program...or back to my PC!

28. I downloaded and installed Mac 1.2 but I don't notice any difference. What have I not done correctly?
-----------------------
Hey Robert,
We've made a lot of improvements to the "plumbing" so if you didn't see any changes immediately, that's great!
You will notice that mail is more responsive and for some users, it corrects some mail display issues.
Stop by http://beta.aol.com to test our next version of AOL Desktop for Mac - we're adding a lot of new features, many sent in by our users.
thanks...

29. I have downloaded Version 1.2 (39) and generally think it is the best Mac application to date but I can't seem to find anywhere how to stop the Desktop and AOL home page automatically starting when I switch on my Mac.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Maurice Elliott.

30. Hello All,
I have found the fix to stop the AOL Mac 1.2 Desktop loading at start up. If you go to system preferences and then accounts it can be deleted in your accounts(s) start up application list or you can just hide it. Full details can be found in MacHelp on your computer.
Regards
Maurice.

31. Hello All,
I have found a way to stop the AOL Desktop 1.2 loading automatically at start up. It can be deleted or hidden by going into system preferences and your account(s) where you can either delete or hide the application at start up. This is explained in MacHelp on you Apple Mac.
Regards,
Maurice

32. I'm having the same issue that someone described above. The same e-mail is sending over and over. I downloaded the program again and it does nothing. This is getting annoying!

33. The claim is that it is by Mac users for Mac users. I can't believe that Mac users would inflict ADS on other Mac users.
Unless there'a a way to disable the ads I will stay with AOL for OSX or drop AOL altogether.

35. I just downloaded the new 1.2.1 desktop - much improved speed and responsiveness. I still had one instance of "message content download" that did not complete. I tried again and all was well. However, I do not seem to be able to print any e-mail. If I print directly to the printer (HP Photosmart 5200 series), nothing happens. If I save as .pdf to my desktop, then try to print the pdf, the printer tries to print but eventual terminates with a error condition.
I am running OS10.4.11. Printing from the old legacy AOL Desktop works fine, as does printing from the web interface version of AOL.

36. I still cannot reset my location. I moved a year and a half ago and when I ask for something like the weather, I get my old location. Sure i can change it but the next time I inquire, I get the old location.

37. I have one question... when the new final version for the mac comes out will we have to have multiple boxes like 4.9 because that is really annoying and I really don't like it.

38. I’m not sure if this is the right place to post my concerns and problems with the new AOL Desktop. If it isn’t, maybe you can direct me to the correct one before I have to find a new ISP.
Here’s the story: I’ve installed 1.2.1 and find it has the same problems that caused me to stop using the previous one and continue to use 10.3.7 in order to get my work done.
1) In the past, to store items in my mailbox on my computer I would move them from the “Filing Cabinet” to my desktop or a file there. Now I seem to have a “Mailbox” but no Filing Cabinet, and when I attempt to transfer an item all I get is a “Text Clipping.”
Am I missing something?
2) One of the daily postings I receive is a listserve abstract composed of 5 to 15 separate messages. When I open it, only the 1st message is shown and the rest as “MIME attachments” that don’t open. Again, what’s wrong here? I need the information.
3) Finally, how can I make Firefox my default browser? On many sites, the AOL browser gives me frames that don’t include all the information. [see attached screenshot) This isn’t a problem with Firefox or Safari.
Thanks for any help you can suggest.
(I have an Emac with OS 10.4.11)

39. My mother is running AOL toolbar on her Mac and cannot import favorites from older version. I go to "File" then "import favorites" and the window will open asking me if I would like to import the favorites from classic AOL and I click on OK and then the message pops up "Favorites reported that no classic favorites exist (code=803)"
I've reported this issue by phone 3 times and have only been told to "keep trying" Any further information?????

40. I still use Version 10.3.7, running under OS 10.4.11. I tried AOL for Mac but didn't like it. It was slower on my setup, for one thing, than 10.3.7, with all its problems. Anyway, I'm having a problem with the download preferences in 10.3.7. I switched hard drives and folders away from the default "Downloads" folder, told it to "save" but it did not save. Then I tried a different folder on the same hard drive. Same thing. The new preference for the download folder does not take. It defaults back to the Downloads folder. Is there a way to remedy this? Thanks. I too am a long-time AOL user. Even had AOL for DOS years ago.
