The AOL Mac/iPhone team is headed to the airport (I just finished my final session at
WWDC '08), I wanted to post a brief, but important Feedback Friday.
This week, AOL released
AOL Desktop for Mac 1.1. This is our first update to AOL Desktop for Mac, released early May that addresses issues (and one new feature, address book - sort by last name) our customers have reported for the past few weeks.
Changes in
AOL Desktop for Mac 1.1:
- Fixed mail performance issues. Now, mailboxes with hundreds of messages (or even thousands) are synched on first run without slowing the system
- Fixed mail display issues with incorrect content
- Fixed Address Book issues that may have not properly switched to the correct screen name when syncing
- Fixed Address Book sync failures which resulted in no contacts
- Address Book sort by last name has been added to this release
- Fixed sorting in Address Book when clicking the column headers
- Fixed sporadic Leopard crash when clicking mailto: links
- Fixed Mac OS X 10.5.3 issues with Buddy List search
- Fixed Mac OS X 10.5.3 issues that may have caused a crash in AIM
- Fixed performance for auto-complete for AIM when user has a large Address Book
Notes:
Mail performance and display issues have been fixed in this release. Please report any issues using the Feedback button on the application toolbar. Any specific information about connection type and speed, whether you are using wireless, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
Please try out the new update and let me know how it works for you. You can download it from
Discover AOL.I will try to respond to comments that have an email address, but rest assured, every comment is read and evaluated by the team.
Thanks...

1. Hi! I was using original new mac 1.0 desktop. Was ok. I did the upgrade and now it is extremely slow and my computer did not like it (heard that roar of the disc). So, I trashed it. Tried to download again and installed: same problem. Would love to go back to first version; but don't know how. Now I am not using either and just going on the web. Thoughts??

2. I downloaded AOL 1.0 about a week ago and while I like the features and face of it, I'm having a lot of problems in efficiency. I used to stay signed on to AOL all day but if I am idle for maybe 15 minutes and click a key to go back to my desktop from the screensaver the AOL program says "goodbye!" While offline from AOL I can't see the number of new messages on my macmail icon, those load when I sign on to AOL.
I don't have time now to fix these things but they are a real nuisance. Wish I'd just stayed with the old version.

3. Why does the "sent" file mix up addressees and text? I am scrolling through the "Sent" file and the To: is not correct for the subject of the e-mail. When I open the file the Addressee is correct and the text is correct. when I close the e-mail, the " Sent" file updates itself to the correct addressee and text. What is going on?

4. Mail processing still seems extremely slow. For example, I have about 5000 items in my local trash. In emptying the trash, it takes a LONG time...maybe it processes 4-5 messages a second.
Also, hard to delete an entire PFC (private filing cabinet) now. Accidentally re-imported my PFC a second time and trying to delete the copy. Version 1.1 insists on emptying all the contents of the subfolders before deleting the top level PFC entry.

5. I am impressed with a lot of the new format and functionality. I'll give a longer test before offering my rating, but it is a long time in coming to have new software for the MAC. The one big problem that I am having right now is that the SEND button has disappeared from my screen and I have not figured out where it went or why it isn't there anymore. It has obviouly been a big problem trying to send email. Can you help?

8. I upgraded to the Mac AOL Desktop, but only my primary screen name upgraded. I had a couple of other screen names that I used and I no longer can find them, particularly in the "switch screen name" option. I attemped to add a screen name, using the already created one, and of course, it is not available. How do I access the other screen name mail accounts?

9. I love the way the Desktop immediately loads what I click on. However, I have the same issue as another writer who can not use his other screen names. There is no way to access to the alternate e-mail account. Also, I do not find a way to access the saved incoming mail that I had on the Classic version. Is there a way to transfer these things? The new platform does not include some important features that are in the old version.

10. for you to access your sub screen names you have to type it in again on the screen name box because that is how desktop for mac works and designed unlike the aol for mac that it has an option for switch screen name and when you type in your SN on the sign in screen your going to have access on your emails again for your sub Screen names:)

12. I'm using AOL Desktop for the Mac, version 1.1.
So many problems have arisen with AOL Desktop.
I can't create a hyperlink on outgoing email. Some emails I receive should have an attachment but do not. (I received three emails that should have had a "save" button. Only one email did!)
Sometimes I open an email and the wrong email opens. Crazy, huh?
I tried to add a comment before, but I was supposed to authenticate my comment by clicking on a hyperlink in an email you sent. I got the email but there was no hyperlink. I tried to copy/paste the URL, but this would not work either.
I have decided to return to my old AOL for Mac X version. Hopefully, some day, you folks will straighten out all the bugs. I will return when this happens.

13. Missing feature (dropped from AOL for Mac in the transition to AOL Desktop for Mac): The ability to predetermine the style settings of both INcoming and OUTgoing mail messages. The stylebar allows formatting font and background colors in OUTgoing mail, but only on a message-by-message basis. There's no way to set a default (template/stationery/whatever) for styles in INcoming mail. This is a feature used by visually handicapped people who favoir strong background colors to help them read email.
Thank you for your consideration.

15. Okay...here's a new crazy one. As you know Lee I have been commenting throughout this development process...hoping for the "best". I sent an email to someone on Saturday. He got it 2 times...then 8 times on Sunday...then 10 times on Monday....9 times yesterday...and already 4 times today. I don't know how to stop it. When I searched in "Sent" mail using his address (how I found the count)..the title of the email comes on under "Subject"...but under "TO" are many other people's addresses...until I click on the email..and then it opens (eventually) and chancges the address in the window to the appropriate one (while opening it displays a wild list of addresses in the TO section of the email...a collection of addresses that I have never used together. WHAT GIVES...AND HOW DO I STOP IT....
Alas when I switched to this latest version all my old email was lost...so I no longer have direct access to you guys....HELP...your loyal user...Margiedee

16. I tried the original version of AOL Desktop for Mac about 4 - 6 weeks ago but quit using it after a few days because of all the problems and went back to using AOL for Mac OSX. I just installed the new AOL Desktop for Mac 1.1 update and immediately encountered a problem. When I open the "Sent Mail" window, the messages that I had sent from my AOL for Mac OSX were there but all the "TO" e-mail addresses were wrong. When I clicked on a message and opened it, the incorrect e-mail address would momentarily be in the "TO" line in the e-mail along with the correct recipient's e-mail address. It would quickly disappear though, leaving only the correct recipient(s). When I closed the message, only the correct names appeared in the "TO" column for those messages I had opened. All the others still had incorrect e-mail addresses. Because of this, I am shutting down this new version of AOL and going back to the AOL for Mac OSX. I truly hope you will get the bugs out of this. I did notice there is now a drafts folder, which is nice. Wish I could check out all the other features, but am afraid to after finding this one problem. It does not bode well.

19. I am using Desktop for Mac v.1. I cannot find a way to keep my old mail on the server, it still disappears after about 27 days. I found and downloaded a document, "How to save e-mail to your Personal Filing Cabinet", but it is for Windows and does not work on a Mac. I can manually drag and drop e-mail, or copy and paste from my Inbox on AOL to the "Saved Mail Inbox On My Mac". But when I am away I want to know that I can still retrieve my mail when I want it, even more than a month later. On my old Dial-up connection mail went straight into my PFC, but I can't find one on the new system. Even the Live Help is not available to Mac users because "Safari cannot recognize AOL.COM addresses." Can you help, please?

20. Is there a way to empty the mail Trash other than via a CTRL-click menu? There really should be a way that doesn't involve CTRL-clicking (adding an item to the "Mail" menu should be easy enough).
Also, is there a way to check for updates automatically (rather than manually checking this blog from time to time)?
