Welcome to the Mac@AOL Blog. My name is Lee Givens and I'm the Product Lead for the Mac products at AOL. You can find the latest information on AOL's software development on the Mac and any cool happenings at AOL. The purpose of the blog is to create a feedback loop so we can hear from our loyal AOL Mac users. Managing a blog is a lot of work, so I enlisted support from the whole team...the Mac team is made up of dedicated Macintosh developers, QA engineers and Product folks.

3. I am among the loyal users who would like AOL to provide assistance/software (even at a cost) to transform pfc files into a more usable form.

Hello Richard,
Are you thinking of being able to convert PFC to another mail format?
Let me know what you're thinking and we can get some people to think about it.
Thanks...Lee

4. I want to disable offline mail display on aol desktop for Mac. I tried every possible way without any luck. Can anyone help me how to do this. Don't anyone else have concerns that everyone can actually read your personal email while you are offline. I prefer to keep all my new, old, sent and even junk mail password protected.

Hello Alan,
I'll ask the AOL Desktop for Mac mail team tomorrow. I'll get an answer for you and post it to the blog.
Thanks...Lee

5. After "upgrading" from Leopard 10.5 to Leopard 10.5.2, suddenly AOL has developed a problem of getting booted after less than 5 minutes online. Really irksome. Safari seems unaffected. Any ideas?

BJ,
Are you referring to a dial-up connection? I will get your comment over to the connectivity team as soon as I can get some specifics.
Thanks...Lee

6. I bought an IMAC
Aol has been a mess.
I read that I need to download 10.5.2 and then
go the AOL's help menu.
I find what I need. I download. Nothing good happens.
I do not even know what to look for after I do the aol
download.
I am confused.

8. I am working with an iBook and an OLD version of AOL (7.0). I'm been trying to download the new version for OS X, but I'm on dialup and the downloading process is freezing up after about 10 minutes. Is there any way to get the version for OS X on a CD to load directly to my computer?

9. HELP. I'm an experiencedMac and AOL user, and I have a new Mac mini running 10.5.2 and after I download AOL for MAC OS X and mount the volume from the .dmg disk image, nothing further ever happens. I try to launch the install application, get a message asking if I want to open the app downloaded from internet, answer yes, and nothing else happens. I am logged on as admin when downloading and trying to install.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I checked blogs, but could not find anything relevant to this problem.
Thanks

10. I gave up on AOL years ago until I just saw what looked like a new version of AOL software that will work with Leopard. I downloaded an installed and it quit immediately just like it has done for years. AOL can't seem to make software that functions on a Mac, even with 5 years to do it in.

11. Here are the problems with AOL and 10.5.2 OSX
1 - web browser does not work, all links to websites do not load websites
2 - the aol app is robbing ram, when looked at thru theactivity monitor, aol used 100%, even when not even using the app, have to quit to clear the hogging ram drain
3 - there is a huge lag time when writing text in IM or email, it will pause every 5-10 seconds if the app has been open for a little while (a hour or more) - again seems like a memory issue
4 - VERY slow to start up the app, long long long time for it to open, even on my mac pro (intel) with 4 gigs of ram

12. oh and one more thing
when looking at a list of all the emails i have in my inbox, the window keeps going to the bottom, to get it to the top i have to keep clicking on mid points to refresh the list so it won't keep jumping around

14. New Intel Imac running OS 10.5.2. AOL loads but I keep getting "mail" didn't load. Error -39. Wished I'd stayed with my old G4. Writing this on my Ibook. Apple says that the problem is AOL. AOL says the problem is Apple. A pox on both their houses.

15. After installing Leopard, I folllowed AOL's advice and down-
loaded and installed v. 10.5.2. That fixed most of my AOL
problems. But I have not been able to access the mail install-
ed on my computer, my Filing Cabinet. The number of emails in
it is displayed, but I can't access it.
I have a complaint about the PRINT command - I'm not permitted
to print just the page or pages I want. If I want to print,
all the pages print.

16. I learned that my comment about the PRINT command should be
directed to Apple, not AOL. The arrow in the PRINT window next
to the name of the printer is not for selecting another printer.
Clicking that arrow opens the full print page with all the print
options. It seems that Apple changed a one-click operation into
a two click operation. They consider that PROGRESS!

17. My commment about the PRINT commmand was misdirected to AOL. It
seems that Apple created the print command, not AOL. Turns out
the arrow next to the name of the printer is not for selecting
another printer. Clicking it opens the full PRINT page that
used to open with one click. Apple made a two-click operation
out of a one-click operation. Real progress!

18. I decided in December to get a new Macbook Pro (having been on PCs) and because I thought that AOL broadband couldn't cope with Macs, I called up to cancel my AOL subscription. The sales persons set me straight on that AOL broadband could work with Macs and I agreed to stay, especially as he offered me £9.99 a month plus a free router and capacity to support up to five computers. So far so good.
Imagine my surprise when I found that the AOL software version (10.2.1) for Mac is exactly the same clunky, misfiring program that was giving me hell when I last used AOL on Macs, five years ago (that was on a network at an office). I have seen the troubleshooting page here and I can see exactly the same problems I had then and exactly the same solutions AOL Help used to tell me over the phone when things went bad. Nothing has changed. I find this amazing. Are the technical challenges so daunting, so intractable that nothing can be done for at least five years and counting?
When I agreed to stay with AOL I imagined that if I had any problems I could call the helpline, but no, when I did so I was told by the nice Indian lady that AOL did not "support" AOL installed on Macs. She said they did "not have the expertise". Extraordinary.
All this is very frustrating. Just like five years ago, "AOL failed to respond" happens literally every other session. And the spinning wheel also appears and then disconnects me, asking me to log on again. This happens about once every four sessions. I also get the "we could not establish a full connection", but a bit less often. And just to make my day perfect, there is a new glitch I did not have in 2003. When following a link within an AOL email, it almost always goes not to the specified linked place, but to a link I followed in an earlier session, or even the day before. I can click on the link up to a dozen times before it wakes up and sends me to the right place. This is a vast, multibillion dollar corporation and yet it seems happy to allow a set of faults to continue uncorrected for at least five years. I think I would be really outraged if I wasn’t more bowled over with incredulity.
Let me also say that I am very reluctant to attempt these elaborate and time-consuming corrective measures suggested here. When I tried them five years ago, they would work for a week or two, or a month, and then the problems came straight back. I am not jumping through those hoops again.
If I hadn't been with AOL so long, and afraid of losing business by changing my address, I would have been out of here years ago. Somebody please explain why they don't fix it up.

19. Did you folks REALLY think AOL was going to come up with a version that worked on a MAC? Who just dropped you off on this planet?!?
